Kathmandu - Chairman of the Samajwadi Party Upendra Yadav has said that the Mahakali Treaty was a betrayal of the nation. He said that the leaders of the Congress and the Communists should apologize for this.
Participating in the clause-by-clause discussion of the constitution amendment bill brought by the government to change the coat of arm as per the new map covering the area including Limpiyadhura, Chairman Yadav said that the Sugauli Treaty was insulting in itself. However, he said that the Kali (Mahakali) river was considered as a border river and it was clear that Nepal would give up its claim in the western part.
However, he said that the preamble of the Mahakali Treaty stated that "most of the Mahakali River is a border river between the two countries." Stating that the current Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli was also present during the Mahakali treaty, he had to answer why he backed away from the Sugauli treaty in the national interest.
He urged the Congress and communist leaders to apologize to the people saying that they chanted slogans of nationalism, insulted Madhesis but committed treason themselves.
Samajwadi Party Chairman Yadav also said that his party had decided to vote in favour of the constitution amendment bill brought by the government.
